Weapons of Mass Destruction Story and photos by Dan Therrien
When we hear news reports about weapons of
mass destruction, Iraq is usually the first thing that comes to mind but is it possible we could be targeted right here in Lowndes County? We should hope not
but being prepared for that possibility is what the 46th Civil

Cynthia Jones new Fort Deposit Town Clerk
Following a review of all applicants for the position, city council member Bryan Hare nominated CJ for the position which was quickly seconded by council member Irish Simmons. When put to a vote, council members Travis Foster and Jacquline Boone joined Hare and Simmons with a vote to hire Jones as the next town clerk. Council member Elbert Lee Means wasn’t present for the voting. “CJ has done an outstanding job of filling in as town clerk since Diane Knight retired Jan. 31,” said Fort Deposit Mayor Fletcher Fountain. “She’s worked in this office for 3 years as an administrative assistant to the town and water clerks and as my personal secretary. She’s shown herself to be a hard worker. She’s very loyal and has a good working knowledge of the computer software used. She will also bring continuity to the office so I think the council made the best decision.” CJ acknowledged having 20 years of office experience. Most recently, she worked as Fort Deposit police dispatcher/office manager for 4 years prior to taking the administrative position in the town hall. She is a 1985 graduate of Calhoun High School and a 1989 graduate of Southern Technical College in Montgomery. She is married to Benny Gipson, and has two children, Courtney, 19, and Carrie 18. CJ is the daughter of Annie Pearl Jones and the late Berry Jones of Fort Deposit. Her grandparents are the late Bradley and Louisa Jones of Calhoun and the late Otis “Nip” and Carrie “Doll” Steiner of Fort Deposit. CJ is currently a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Calhoun. “I’m excited to have been given this opportunity,” CJ said. “I’d first like to give honor to God for the knowledge and wisdom he’s allowed me to have. I’d also like to personally thank Diane Sexton for all her help since Diane Knight retired. I really appreciate it.” She also thanked all those who supported her nomination.
“This job
provides many challenges and I promise to do a good job and represent Fort
Deposit to the very best of my ability,” CJ concluded. Fort
