Weapons of Mass Destruction
in
Lowndes County?

Story and photos by Dan Therrien

When we hear news reports about weapons of mass destruction, Iraq is usually the first thing that comes to mind but is it possible we could be targeted right here in Lowndes County? We should hope not but being prepared for that possibility is what the 46th Civil Support Team, Weapons of Mass Destruction unit, out of Montgomery, is trained to handle.

Fort Deposit got a taste of what such a scenario Tuesday when the 46th CST conducted a training exercise at the National Guard Armory, home of the 781st Transportation Company. The exercise setting was that the 781st had recently returned from Iraq and the mail which was sent to the unit in Iraq was forwarded here and one box was found to have Arabic writing and contained a suspicious powder so the 46th CST was called in.

Maj. Rick Pelham, deputy commander, 46th Civil Support Team - Weapons of Mass Destruction, briefs survey team members on the action plan prior to their going in to investigate and take readings of a suspicious package sent to the National Guard Armory in Fort Deposit as part of a training exercise June 13. Members of the Fort Deposit volunteer fire department observe in the background to gain a better understanding of the procedures involved and the role they play. Cynthia Jones new Fort Deposit Town Clerk

Cynthia Jones (CJ) was voted in as Fort Deposit’s new town clerk by the city council during their regular meeting Monday night. She is the first Black person ever to hold this position.

Following a review of all applicants for the position, city council member Bryan Hare nominated CJ for the position which was quickly seconded by council member Irish Simmons. When put to a vote, council members Travis Foster and Jacquline Boone joined Hare and Simmons with a vote to hire Jones as the next town clerk. Council member Elbert Lee Means wasn’t present for the voting.

“CJ has done an outstanding job of filling in as town clerk since Diane Knight retired Jan. 31,” said Fort Deposit Mayor Fletcher Fountain. “She’s worked in this office for 3 years as an administrative assistant to the town and water clerks and as my personal secretary. She’s shown herself to be a hard worker. She’s very loyal and has a good working knowledge of the computer software used. She will also bring continuity to the office so I think the council made the best decision.”

CJ acknowledged having 20 years of office experience. Most recently, she worked as Fort Deposit police dispatcher/office manager for 4 years prior to taking the administrative position in the town hall. She is a 1985 graduate of Calhoun High School and a 1989 graduate of Southern Technical College in Montgomery. She is married to Benny Gipson,  and has two children, Courtney, 19, and Carrie 18. CJ is the daughter of Annie Pearl Jones and the late Berry Jones of Fort Deposit. Her grandparents are the late Bradley and Louisa Jones of Calhoun and the late Otis “Nip” and Carrie “Doll” Steiner of Fort Deposit. CJ is currently a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Calhoun.

“I’m excited to have been given this opportunity,” CJ said. “I’d first like to give honor to God for the knowledge and wisdom he’s allowed me to have. I’d also like to personally thank Diane Sexton for all her help since Diane Knight retired. I really appreciate it.” She also thanked all those who supported her nomination.

“This job provides many challenges and I promise to do a good job and represent Fort Deposit to the very best of my ability,” CJ concluded.
